Forty years ago, a generation of Taiwanese photojournalists documented the island’s path toward democracy, capturing movements from the Wild Lily protests to labor, environmental, and Indigenous struggles. Between 1983 and 1988 alone, thousands of protests marked a society in rapid transformation.
Eyes on Democracy, this Berlin special screening version edited from the original trilogy, draws on decades of work and archival images to revisit these defining moments. More than history, it reflects on how Taiwan’s freedoms—speech, elections, and pluralism—were hard won, highlighting civic action, collective memory, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.Artist:
